Children are natural-born scientists. From birth, they spend their days learning about the world around them. As kids get older, and become more curious, they begin to question how and why things work the way they do.
With an unquenchable thirst for knowledge, young children have an innate desire to explore science and all that it entails. Books, science kits, and hands-on projects are all meaningful and effective ways to support children’s science exploration.
Another great resource is YouTube. With a wide selection of videos to choose from, on every subject you could possibly imagine, YouTube offers a wealth of information just waiting to be absorbed by eager young minds.
If you head over to YouTube and search for science videos, you’ll likely be inundated with choices. In an effort to make finding videos that will engage and inspire kids (and adults) a bit easier, we’ve narrowed down the selection to 7 of the most useful, interesting, and entertaining YouTube science channels available.
Sick Science – Science teacher extraordinaire, Steve Spangler, shares tons of interactive experiments to do at home or in the classroom. Full of ideas for exploring everything from chemistry to physics, kids of all ages will adore these videos.
SciShow – This channel answers just about every science question you can think of, from why cats purr to why bruises change color. Some of the videos on this channel are geared more towards older kids (middle school and high school), but there are many that are useful and interesting for younger kids as well. We use these videos almost daily in our homeschool, and they would certainly work well in a classroom environment as well.
Minute Physics – With a huge selection of science videos on topics such as space and gravity, you’re sure to find something for everyone. I appreciate that the videos are quick and to the point, making them great when you’re short on time, or have children with a limited attention span.
NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) – You’ll find over 2,000 videos on this channel, featuring everything from behind-the-scenes reports to footage of specific space expeditions.
AsapSCIENCE – Fun and informational videos that investigate science-related questions, on a wide range of subjects, in an entertaining way. Adults will love this channel just as much as the kids do.
WhizKidScience – Simple and engaging science experiments for kids, by kids. Many of the experiments are classics, that you’ve likely done before, but they are certainly worth exploring again and again.
