One of the biggest milestones in a young child’s life, is potty training. It’s an exciting event, that officially promotes them from toddler to big kid.
For some families though, potty training can evoke feelings of anxiousness and stress. There’s no need for that. With a little planning and the right perspective, potty training can be a positive, memorable experience for children and parents.
After potty training my own 4 kids, as well as several other children who I’ve cared for over the years, I’ve discovered a few simple tips to help families manage the seemingly overwhelming task of potty training a child.
Don’t compare – As with other aspects of childhood, potty training will be a unique experience for each child. Comparing your little one to a playmate, cousin, or sibling will only frustrate them (and you).
I had one son who was potty trained (quickly) right after turning 2 years old, and another that was nearly 4 before he consistently used the toilet (after many months of trying). Each child has different needs and abilities.
When your little one is interested, they will let you know, and the entire process will be much easier than if you push them to potty train before they are ready.
Be prepared – Having the tools and resources you need for potty training is vital to staying consistent and helping your child succeed.
Always take extra clothing when you plan to be away from home. The one time you forget, will inevitably be the time your child has an accident. Having spare clothes nearby will allow you to quickly (and discreetly) change your child, avoiding any embarrassment on their part.
Stock up on fun motivators – small toys, books, candy, or stickers. Use what you feel is right for your child to encourage their potty training success.
Stay positive – When your child has had numerous accidents, or flat out refuses to use the toilet, it can be tempting to lose your patience. Stay calm and be positive. Keep your child motivated with your enthusiasm and pride, and be sure they know how excited you are for them to learn this new skill.
Clean up messes promptly, and let your child know it’s not a big deal. Explain that everyone has accidents when potty training, and remind them to keep trying.
Praise young children for any progress they make – big or small. Positive reinforcement is necessary for kids to feel proud of their accomplishments.
Maintain a healthy perspective – In the grand scheme of things, potty training is a pretty minor event in our parenting journey. It might seem like a big deal as we are in the midst of it all, but looking back, you’ll realize that it was simply just another life skill you helped your child attain.
Have a backup plan – Potty training doesn’t always happen as quickly and effortlessly as we might imagine.
Potty training, like any other skill that young children learn, takes time. Accidents will happen, tears will likely be shed, and the entire process might be more intense than you ever expected.
Regardless, your child will be potty trained eventually. Years later you’ll look back on the experience and realize just how fast it all happened.
