One of the things that people seem to be most surprised about upon visiting our home, is the fact that we have very few toys. You would think that with 4 kids running around, toys would be strewn everywhere. That is certainly not the case.
After years of spending money on toys that my kids hardly used, I finally learned there are actually very few toy items worth acquiring.
The majority of the time, my boys play with LEGOS or toy vehicles (Matchbox, Hot Wheels, Little Tikes). The rest of the time, they like to play board games, draw/color/make crafts, and play video games.
We also have a small collection of play food (Melissa & Doug and Learning Resources) that they adore. This is great to have around for dramatic/imaginative play. My 3, 6 and 9 year olds love to sell items in their “store,” which is a really fun, hands-on way to work on math skills while role playing.
I’m definitely at the point where I’d rather have fewer, high quality toys that I know will last, rather than a bunch of cheap items that will break after a few uses.
Last month, my 2 youngest boys both celebrated birthdays, and of the items they received for gifts, these two Melissa & Doug toys have definitely been the most-played-with.
