The world around us is filled with sugary drink options. Everywhere we go, we’re bombarded with less-than-healthy beverages that entice children and adults alike. We know drinking water is the best option for our health (and budget), but convincing the entire family to ditch the alternatives and stick with water can be challenging. Try these simple tips for getting the whole family to drink more water.
Make it fun
Drinking water with unique straws makes it much more exciting. My kids love Krazy Straws, while I’m a fan of Stainless Steel Drinking Straws. Find your family’s favorite variety, and reserve them just for drinking water.
Water doesn’t have to be boring. Jazz it up by adding a variety of fruit slices. My family has tried everything from lemons and limes to strawberries and pineapple. Using frozen fruit has the added benefit of keeping your drink cold. Such a simple way to add flavor and nutrition to your family’s water.
Keep it accessible
If kids have to ask for a glass of water, they might not bother. Make it easy for them by keeping a glass, cup, or water bottle where they can access it independently. They’ll be much more likely to drink water throughout the day, if it’s readily available.
Limit the options
If your fridge is full of soda and juice, it will be a whole lot more difficult to encourage healthier choices. Limit the options, and the whole family will be more apt to guzzle water.
Be a good role model
Little eyes are constantly observing our actions. If kids see adults chugging soda, or other sugary drinks, on a regular basis, they won’t be quite as willing to drink the water they need to stay hydrated and healthy. Children tend to mimic adult behavior. When we choose better options, and allow our children to witness those wise choices, it will surely have a lasting positive impact on their own decisions.
